The Heart Behind the Practice

Meet Dr. Dominique Thomas

Hi! I have been where you are now. That deep exhale matters. My therapist’s dedication, steady presence, and gentle push helped me do the work I did not know I needed. Being a therapiat is my calling, and I do this work with purpose. I work with adults and college students navigating burnout, anxiety, adult ADHD, family and relationship wounds, and the process of reconnecting with who they are beyond careers, roles, or motherhood. My style is warm, client centered, and practical, with tools you can use in real life long after session ends.

I bring eight years of experience as a school counselor and currently serve in school counseling leadership. Service has always been central to my work. I mentor teens and have coached for six years. This body of experience keeps my approach grounded and focused on steady, meaningful progress. I am also a wife and mother, with a daughter in college and a teen son, so I understand how family dynamics and life demands can shift across seasons of life.

Everyone has a story. What’s yours?

3 Questions with Dr. Thomas:

What is something you wish you could tell your younger self?  Own your story regardless of what you've endured. You are loved. You matter and your voice matters. People do not determine who you'll become and how far you will go. Be yourself because you only have one life. Your people/core group will come naturally at the right time.

Surround yourself with people who want the best for you and themselves. Mistakes happen. Challenges are part of life and those challenges don’t define you. Try not to take negative actions and words of people personal, because it's not always about you. Work hard and stay focused. Fall and get back up. Cry... even flowers need watering. Hug yourself!

If you had the opportunity to create a new holiday, what would it celebrate? The holiday would be called "Disconnect to Reconnect Day." This holiday would be dedicated to unplugging from electronics and social media for a day. It would celebrate the importance of prioritizing mental health and overall wellness. The world is filled with digital distractions, and this day would allow people to take a day off, recharge, and focus on their well-being.

If you weren’t a therapist, what other career would you have? I would work in tech. I’m really into cybersecurity and I've had a love for technology since I was a child. Have ya'll ever heard of the game, "Chip's Challege?" It's a 1989 Microsoft computer game. I was glued to the screen many nights trying to crack the coding puzzles.

I'm also creative at heart, so painting or writing is my way to unwind and recharge. On top of that, I love building and remodeling things around my house. I also love reviving old things. There is beauty in seeing the potential in things that people outside of a creative mind wouldn't choose or want to throw away. Whether it’s building a kitchen island, grass wall or just making my space feel more like home, I’m all about it, and I’m pretty good at it too!

I May be a Therapist, but...

I love to read! My favorite book genres are Romance, Self-Help and Thrillers. My latest read is Sugar by Bernice Mcfadden.

Pizza and Thai are my favorite foods. My favorite Thai dishes are Pad Kee Mao and Pad See Ew and I love cheese pizza with bell peppers and mushrooms.

My favorite color is not an actual color. It’s the shade Black.

I love dogs. Pugs are at the top of my list! My fur baby's name is Sebastian "Bash."

Being a homebody is actually not that bad. Reading, journaling, watching movies such as 90's Love Stories like Love Jones and watching series such as Sweet Magnolias, First 48, Tiny Beautiful Things, Big Little Lies, Little Fires Everywhere, AHS, Harlem, You, Bel-Air, Ted Lasso and The Pitt have me glued to the couch!

I love fall! Pumpkin spice, the cool breeze and family time. Yes!

I love Podcasts. Did you know that I am the 'okayest' podcaster also?

Self-care for me is essential. A long shower, good music, soft PJs, a good book or a massage are my top forms of self-care.

My favorite movie is Dear John. If you want to ugly cry, watch it.

Lebron James is the G.O.A.T. Grit, grace, family, and the game. That’s it.

According to my online assessment, I am a Slytherin rising and a Hufflepuff moon! Yes, I am a Harry Potter fan! Anyway, "it does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live." - Albus Dumbledore

Mountains or beaches? Mountain me.

Music? Drake, of course! Or Maverick City Music, Durand Bernarr, Sza, Teddy Swims, Shaboozey, Whitney Houston, Tye Tribbett, Cleo Sol or Jagged Edge. To me, there is no such thing as a"better" genre. It's just good or bad music. Music is life, music is art. Well... for me it is.
